Huge railway project linking holy sites in Saudi Arabia hit the breaks over sandy tracks

Russia and China to Build Railway to Eastern SiberiaRead

Nigeria’s rail transport modernization agenda on course – Minister

Oman Rail likely to begin ops in 4 years

13/03/2016 (Gulf News - Bahrain): Oman Rail is on track with its rail project, although it could take another four years before the first line is operational, a top official said.The company was refocusing its priorities on using rail in non-coastal areas to transport tonnes of materials such as dolomite, gypsum and marble to its three major ports at Sohar, Duqm and Salalah, Oman Rail’s chief commercial officer John Lesniewski was quoted as saying by Oman Observer, which cited The National.Oman Rail had already significantly advanced plans for its $11 billion rail network, which was due to be built in four segments, the report said.The first of these phases was meant to comprise 207 kilometres of track running from the sultanate’s border with the UAE at Buraimi to Sohar Industrial Port. Tenders were floated in September 2014 and an award was expected to be made last year.

China's CRRC lands $1.3 billion Chicago rail car project

10/03/2016 (Reuters - UK): China's CRRC Corp said it has won its second major contract in the United States after the Chicago transport authority accepted its $1.3 billion bid to build rail cars for the city."This is the largest subway car project that a Chinese railway equipment company has received from a developed country to date. 'Made in China' rail is set to land in the United States' Chicago," the company said in an e-mailed statement.Encouraged by Beijing, China's railway firms are aggressively bidding for contracts in overseas markets but have so far been successful mostly in developing markets. Chinese firms have also expressed interest in building high-speed rail lines in California and Nevada.

China Eyes Major Investment in Iran’s Railway, Shipping Sectors

12/03/2016 (Tasnim - Iran): TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Two Chinese firms expressed willingness for investment in Iran’s railway and shipping sectors following the termination of anti-Tehran sanctions.China’s National Transportation Equipment & Engineering Co Ltd (CTC) is about to finalize an agreement on the $3 billion rail project to link Tehran with the northeastern holy city of Mashhad, a Chinese source told Reuters earlier. China's Export and Import Bank (EXIM) is likely to fund 85 percent of thecost for the 930-km (580 mile) high-speed rail project, the source added. Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co has likewise been in talks on building container ships and oil tankers for Iran, according to the report. It added that Iran would need $8-12 billion to modernize its fleet of container,cargo and oil tanker ships by around 2022.
